ESCAPE Researchers Teach Local High School Students about Environmental Surveillance

In December of 2025, ESCAPE researchers went to Buckhorn High School in Perry County, Kentucky to demonstrate to students how we look for viruses in environmental samples in the field. Researchers and students took water samples from a small river that ran next to the school and then students were taken inside and shown how to conduct the processes necessary to test these water samples for viruses and bacteria. The students then conducted environmental analysis on the samples with the assistance of ESCAPE scientists.
